Well, I own this t-shirt and like the anti-marriage message of it a lot, but but I've always been somewhat bothered by the implicit sexism and reinforcement of gender stereotypes. So I decided this morning that I'd finally look around for its opposite, with a frowning bride and smiling groom, which I've heard exists.

Now, maybe my Google-fu is just failing me today, but it's hard enough to find that design in the first place, and the one or two sites that actually do have it, only offer it in women's sizes. (And the original only in men's sizes.) For example, here and here. Do the people who make these things just not bother to consider the possibility that men just might sometimes want to recognize that marriage can suck just as much for women? Fail.

And I could understand if it was good-quality Target shirts that had made that choice, to focus their limited manufacturing resources on the styles that are most likely to sell. But this is a CafePress shop, for Goddess' sake. They could easily provide these things in any conceivable style with five seconds' thought and a click of a button.

Of course, what I'd really like to find is one with both figures frowning, but that might be expecting too much.

I'm not sure how handy you are with things of this nature, but you could always make your own.

www.customink.com, zazzle.com, and spreadshirt.com all seem like promising starts.

You could always go the old-school route and print your design on an iron-on transfer.

Ehh, I don't know... While I can see the anti-marriage message in it, the overwhelming message, to me, is the old stereotype: the bride is happy because she's "caught her man" and can rely on him, spend his money, whatever, and the groom is unhappy because he has to give up his youth and freedom to this demanding woman. Which makes me way uncomfortable. That's just what I would think upon seeing that shirt, though... I think a shirt with both figures frowning would get the message across better, maybe?

I'm curious to hear more details about your opposition to marriage. Do you have any LJ entries on it you could refer me to?

It seems to me that, rather than making an anti-marriage statement, it reinforces the sexist idea that marriage is every woman's ultimate goal in life and marriage is the end of every man's. Big Fail.

Design that shirt yourself, yo. If you do, Brandon and I will wear matching ones to our reception.

Amy and I were walking around Ybor last night and saw something like that in one of the shops- neither of the figures were frowning, but there was 'fail' or something underneath it. I can't remember. Also can't remember the name of the shop, unfortunately... I fail =(
